Day with John Wooden
December 5th, 2006 An honor and a privelege! Wow. What an amazing day! On September 19th, we arrive at breakfast in Encino, and when I see him, I am floored!!!! His warm smile barely uncovers how truly thoughtful, kind, and special of a person he really is. I was so excited and so nervous to meet him. At this point, just meeting him was special enough to last a lifetime.
After breakfast, the morning continues and we go back to his apartment to get an interview for an upcoming video project - Sue’s NFCA Hall of Fame Induction Video. The interview is to be about Coach Enquist’s success to serve for her NFCA Video, that is to play in Arizona at this year’s Coaches Convention. What an honor to interview Coach Wooden on Coach Enquist - two highly honored UCLA coaches! After the interview, we sat in his apartment while he read us poetry. He has a binder full of his favorite poetry written by one of his former players. All of these poems are written from the foundation of Coach Wooden’s philosophies. (These compiliations are now in the process of being published by the author.) Never did I dream I would get to meet John Wooden, but then to listen to him recite poetry? Again, W-O-W. I was so honored to have the opportunity to meet him that I couldn’t even bring myself to ask for a picture with him. So when I got home that day, as moved as I was, I had nothing to remind me of how special spending the day with John Wooden was. And so the day ended. That was September 19th….And then comes December 5th….Today, December 5th, the interview is for a video we are putting together for Annie Meyers Drysdale. Coach Wooden on Annie Meyers-Drysdale. We show up at his apartment and Sue says, “Papa, you remember my videographer, Shannon, right?” Coach Wooden doesn’t say a word. He pulls out an 8×10 framed picture. It’s a snapshot someone took of the four of us that day at the breakfast! He looks at Sue and says, “For her,” and smiles. I was beat red. Blushing from head to toe, I didn’t even know how to extend my gratitude. I couldn’t believe it! There’s the picture I knew someone took, but I thought I’d never see! Coach Wooden has it, and he’s giving it to me! Framed! So even beyond being the most well-known basketball coach, this is yet another testament as to what a thoughtful, kind, and special person John Wooden truly is. His career was to teach and coach….but he lives his life not only teaching and coaching, but truly touching others’ lives. And that day, he touched mine.
